A version number alone won’t tell you which download to grab. You also need the release branch, your device, what content is included and whether your old saves carry over. The newest file is not always the right one. Three games show the main traps clearly: Summertime Saga, Eternum and Being a DIK. Here is how to handle each, plus a simple routine for any update.

Stable build or preview: Summertime Saga’s two branches

The Summertime Saga download page offers two branches: a stable legacy build and an ongoing preview. They serve different purposes. The preview is not a drop-in replacement for everything the legacy build does.

Match the branch to what you want to do:

  • Starting a fresh playthrough? Read the creator’s current description of each branch and pick the one that fits.
  • Following a specific walkthrough? Use the branch that walkthrough was written for.

Our Summertime Saga review doesn’t push one version number, because release details change. If a guide’s steps don’t match your game, check whether you’re on a different branch before you assume your install is broken. And skip random third-party patches.

Eternum: make sure you have the right game

Eternum’s creator page is the home of the choice-based visual novel by Caribdis. It is not Eternum EX, a retro platformer on Steam with a similar name.

Before comparing versions, check that the creator, the genre and the download page all line up. A convincing search snippet can still point to the wrong product.

Once you’re on the right page, use it as your reference for files and update notes. Eternum supports Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, as covered in our Eternum review, though future builds could change that. Download the file labelled for your system. A file for another platform won’t work just because the name looks close, whatever an unofficial tutorial says.

Being a DIK: play the seasons in order

For Being a DIK on Steam, the base product is Season 1. The Season 3 listing requires the base game and Season 2, and uses saves from the end of Season 2.

That is a specific chain:

  1. Season 1 (the base game).
  2. Season 2.
  3. Season 3, continuing from your end-of-Season-2 save.

Don’t buy the latest season just because it’s the newest. Read both the base game page and the add-on page before buying, and look at which earlier content and which save point each one expects. Our Being a DIK review lays this out. We don’t offer workarounds to skip seasons or convert saves. Follow the publisher’s current instructions for your season and store.

Note your version before you update

Before any update, take thirty seconds to write down:

  • The version the game displays.
  • Where you installed it from.
  • Your operating system.
  • The version your guide covers, if you use one.

These notes tell you whether a problem comes from the update or from mismatched instructions. They also turn a vague “the new version doesn’t work” into a support request someone can actually answer.

Keep purchase receipts and your original download link. You never need to share account details or send private files to a stranger to ask a compatibility question. If official support asks for a diagnostic file, use their channel and know what’s in it before sending. We haven’t inspected these games’ save formats, so don’t assume a save holds only gameplay data.

Back up your saves the creator’s way

Look for the creator’s instructions on saving or backing up progress before you replace an installation. Save locations differ by operating system and build, so we don’t give a single folder path. If the publisher explains how to export or copy save files, follow that method for your version. Don’t borrow another game’s instructions, even if it runs on the same engine.

Where the official instructions allow it, keep your old installation until the new one opens your progress correctly. A successful launch is only step one. Check that your save is recognised and that you’re at the right point in the story. If compatibility isn’t spelled out, don’t delete your only working setup and hope for an automatic conversion.

Match your walkthrough to your build

A walkthrough can be accurate for its own version and useless for yours. Check its branch, chapter and platform before following a long list of steps. If it doesn’t say, treat it as incomplete for troubleshooting. A missing menu or objective is often explained by a content change in the current creator notes, so read those first.

Decide whether you want spoiler-free help or the full route. Setup advice shouldn’t require reading later plot events. Our beginner visual novel guide focuses on format, edition and platform, so you can choose a game without spoilers. We don’t publish ending counts or completion times: they wouldn’t fix a version mismatch, and we can’t back them up.

A five-step update routine

Use this every time:

  1. Find the official release.
  2. Read its requirements and transition notes.
  3. Back up your progress using the creator’s method.
  4. Install the build for your platform.
  5. Check your save loads correctly, then remove the old setup.

Each step answers one question. Jumping from an announcement straight to deleting your old install mixes them all into one move that’s hard to undo.

Which version should you choose?

  • You want a settled Summertime Saga playthrough: the stable legacy build.
  • You want Summertime Saga’s in-progress branch: the ongoing preview.
  • You’re following a walkthrough: whichever branch and version it was written for.
  • You’re starting Being a DIK: Season 1, then each season in order.
  • You’re playing Eternum: the file for your system from the creator’s page.
  • Compatibility info is missing: stay on your working version until it’s clear.

Newer doesn’t automatically mean right for your saves. If managing previews isn’t for you, try one of our Summertime Saga alternatives instead. Checked on 5 October 2026: always reread the release notes for the exact version you’re about to install.
